ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture is a therapeutic intervention that involves the insertion of very thin, filiform stainless steel needles into specific points on the body to promote the circulation of blood and Qi. Its therapeutic effect comes from the body's natural response to the needles—moving blood to reduce inflammation, clear toxins, and distribute oxygen and nutrients to tissues.
Acupuncture is part of a broader medical system known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or Eastern Medicine, which has been developed over thousands of years through careful observation, experimentation, and refinement. This system is rooted in the foundational philosophy of Yin and Yang, a dynamic understanding of balance within the body. By applying this framework to the functions and relationships of the body's organs, TCM has developed a rich methodology encompassing herbal medicine, acupuncture, bodywork, exercise, and nutrition to support health and healing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Acupuncture Treats
Acupuncture is most known for its ability to treat pain. Many of my patients come to me for conditions like low back pain, neck and shoulder pain, knee pain, fibromyalgia, neuropathy, and other unexplained discomforts. Acupuncture is highly effective for pain unless there is a significant structural issue.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive system that integrates acupuncture, herbal medicine, tui na (therapeutic massage), Qi Gong, and nutrition. This medicine has been the primary healing system for much of the world for thousands of years, and it treats a wide range of conditions.
Some of the conditions TCM can treat include:
-
Gastrointestinal disorders
-
Gynecological issues (e.g., fibroids, endometriosis)
-
Asthma
-
Insomnia
-
Headaches & migraines
-
Tremors
-
Muscle weakness
-
Skin rashes
-
And even the common cold!
TCM is not magical or mystical, it is grounded in practical techniques that follow the anatomy and physiology of the human body. There are certainly conditions that TCM cannot treat, but there are many that it can help. As my first teacher, Dr. Woo, always emphasized, it is important to know one’s limits.
Ultimately, successful acupuncture treatment requires patient commitment. Healing is a collaborative process that requires effort from both the practitioner and the patient.
